Believe it or not, the best in-ceiling speakers can sound every bit as nice as comparably priced in-wall speakers. Not only that, ceiling speakers are typically
voice-matched to the same brand and series of in-wall speaker, making it easy to mix and match in-wall and ceiling speakers depending on the needs of
your particular installation.
Especially when building a home theater speaker system, it's important that
each of the main left and right speakers, the center channel speaker, and the surround sound / rear speakers all have the
same tweeters and woofers, or the surround sound effects won't sound nearly as good as they should.
In addition to being a popular
choice for installation as just surround sound / rear speakers, ceiling speakers can also be used for
an entire home theater speaker
system. Some higher-end ceiling speakers like the SpeakerCraft
AIM8 Five pictured to the top right allow you to aim your tweeter and/or woofer to send
the best sound to the "sweet spot" of
the listening area.
In ceiling speakers are also extremely popular for use in whole house audio distribution systems because they are smaller in size than in-wall
speakers, and are more easily hidden out of sight in the ceiling. A pair of ceiling speakers is designed to have wide sound dispersion to fill up large spaces with
music. In any small room where it would be difficult to fit or too expensive to install two ceiling speakers, consider going with a single dual-voice-coil stereo ceiling speaker with dual tweeters,
like the SpeakerCraft 8.5 DT dual-coil ceiling speaker pictured below.
