For the purposes of this site, we will assume that you want to install a 7.1 channel surround sound speaker system as part of a dedicated high definition home theater. That way, you will be able to experience 100% of the digital audio effects that are included on Blu-ray Disc movie soundtracks.

If you are looking for the absolute best performance possible from your in wall home theater speaker system and price is not your top concern, consider installing THX Ultra2 certified in wall speakers like those available from Klipsch, Polk Audio, and Sonance.

Speaker placement  When it comes to speaker locations, the center channel speaker typically goes below your wall-mounted flat panel plasma, LCD, or front projection screen. A perforated projection screen allows you to locate the center speaker behind the screen, so it sounds like the dialog is actually coming from the screen. The main front speakers are typically located to the left and right sides of the screen. (For distance from each other, you can think of the left and right main speakers as two corners of an equilateral triangle, with the third corner being your prime home theater seating area.) Two surround speakers typically work best mounted in the walls to each side of your seating, and two rear speakers go behind you, perhaps in the back wall. And then there's one or more subwoofers for reproducing the low frequency effects -- they will likely produce their best deep bass mounted in the same wall as the main speakers.

Other home theater components  Besides a speaker system, you will need a home theater receiver (or preamplifier, surround sound processor, and one or more power amplifiers). You will also need one or more HD video sources, such as a Blu-ray Disc player or HDTV receiver. For a high definition video screen, we recommend that you go with a wall-mounted flat panel 1080p plasma HDTV, 1080p LCD HDTV, or a 1080p home theater front projector and projection screen.

MTX HT520BDP in-wall surround speakers are sold in pairs.

Sold in pairs, the MTX HT520BDP in-wall surround speaker pictured to the left has a switchable di-pole/bi-pole design that's ideal for rear surround speaker applications. In standard di-pole mode, the speakers are wired "out of phase" with each other which offers a more diffuse and enveloping sound field. Switch from di-pole to bi-pole (in phase) when the install calls for a larger, more dynamic listening field.

Sold individually, the MTX HTS28W in-wall subwoofer pictured to the right features dual 8 inch woofers. This MTX subwoofer handles 200 watts RMS/400 watts maximum, but it DOES NOT have it's own built-in amplification. You'll have to supply external power to the sub from an extra channel on your receiver or power amplifier, or purchase a separate subwoofer amplifier.
